Join the ILGA World meet-ups: a space dedicated to our membership to share their experiences, learn from each other, and support our global communities!

The next event will focus on the UN Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity — whose mandate is up for renewal at the Human Rights Council in July 2025.

In July 2025, the UN Human Rights Council will vote to renew the mandate of the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

This is the only United Nations mechanism specifically dedicated to addressing violence and discrimination against LGBT and gender-diverse persons.

Since its creation in 2016, mandate holders have extensively documented these issues; they have also sent 171 communications documenting allegations of violations and carried out 10 country visits – and assisting States to implement international human rights standards, as well as collaborating with UN mechanisms.

However, violence and discrimination still persist worldwide, and it is essential that the mandate continues its work.

• share your own experience, and hear from other ILGA World members, about engaging with the mandate
• find out how to engage in the global renewal campaign – joining hundreds of organisations worldwide calling on the Human Rights Council to renew the mandate!
