HRC 56 side event: Reflecting on IESOGI report on the 2023 country visit to the UK

During the 56th Session of the Human Rights Council, the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity will present the report of the mandate’s country visit to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland conducted in 2023.

The IESOGI report highlighted some key areas of concern in relation to the rights of LGBT and gender-diverse people in the UK, which include:

  • concerns about the erosion of equal rights protections for LGBT people, in particular trans people
  • An increase in violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, in particular hate crimes against trans people
  • Concern about LGBT inclusion in the education sector
  • Impact of asylum policies on LGBT people
  • Lack of equitable access to healthcare for trans communities.

This side event will speak to this situation — particularly the impact on trans communities — discuss the findings of the report, and look at ways forward to improve the situation for our communities in the country.
