Bullying: 4 in 5 countries have no laws protecting LGBTI youth
Bullying based on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) is a major roadblock to students’ futures. It severely harms their mental health and lowers their academic and job prospects.
States’ inaction against this kind of violence is not only extremely harmful to the youth who are suffering it, but it is also detrimental to the sustainable development of our societies.
Last November, ILGA World launched a new section of its Database, tracking legislation protecting youth against SOGIESC-based bullying in education. This initiative responds directly to the profound global gap in legal protections: as ILGA World’s research shows, only a fifth of UN member States possess comprehensive anti-bullying laws that explicitly cover at least one of the SOGIESC grounds.
The ILGA World Database now offers the crucial research and evidence to advocate effectively for laws that ensure every youth can enjoy a high-quality education, free from violence, and continue pursuing their dreams.
Join us on Friday, 27 February 2026 to discuss how legislation and policies against SOGIESC-based bullying are crucial to ensure that every youth can exercise their right to education.
