During the 56th Session of the Human Rights Councilan inter-governmental body within the United Nations which has the responsibility to promote and protect human rights. It is comprised of 47 member States, each elected to 3-year terms by the 193 member States of the United Nations. More, the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discriminationunequal or unfair treatment which can be based on a range of grounds - such as age, ethnic background, disability, and diverse sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions or sex characteristics, amongst others. More based on sexual orientationrefers to a person’s capacity for profound emotional, affectional and sexual attraction to - and intimate and sexual relations with - individuals of a different gender or the same gender or more than one gender. More and gender identityrefers to a person’s deeply felt internal and individual experience of gender, which may or may not correspond with the sex assigned at birth. More will present the report of the mandate’s country visit to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland conducted in 2023.
The IESOGIabbreviation referring to the Special Procedure mandate holder of the position as Independent Expert (IE) on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI). More report highlighted some key areas of concern in relation to the rights of LGBT and gender-diverse people in the UK, which include:
- concerns about the erosion of equal rights protections for LGBT people, in particular transadjective/umbrella term to describe a person whose gender identity does not match the sex they were assigned at birth. More people
- An increase in violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and genderrefers to a social construct which places cultural and social expectations on individuals based on their assigned sex. More identity, in particular hate crimes against trans people
- Concern about LGBT inclusion in the education sector
- Impact of asylum policies on LGBT people
- Lack of equitable access to healthcare for trans communities.
This side event will speak to this situation — particularly the impact on trans communities — discuss the findings of the report, and look at ways forward to improve the situation for our communities in the country.
