Hello everyone!
Welcome back to ILGA World’s video series on the Sustainable Development Goals. In this video, I’m going to talk about SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities.
SDG 10 aims to reduce inequality within and among countries by promoting social, economic, and political inclusion for all. It focuses on reducing income disparities, ensuring equal opportunities, and empowering marginalized and disadvantaged groups. LGBTI people continue to face significant inequalities and exclusion worldwide. In Latin America, LGBTI individuals are more likely to live in extreme poverty compared to the general population and face higher rates of unemployment and homelessness. This is the case in Brazil, Mexico, and Peru.
In several countries in Europe such as Hungary and Georgia, recent anti-LGBTI laws have severely restricted access to essential services and rights, exacerbating social and economic disparities. Similarly, in some African countries like Nigeria and Uganda, where same-sex relationships are criminalized, LGBTI people are systematically denied access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. To reduce inequalities, it is essential that governments implement policies that promote the social, economic, and political inclusion of all people, regardless of their SOGIESC.
Addressing discrimination against LGBTI individuals in employment, education, and healthcare is crucial to ensuring equal opportunities and reducing poverty rates among these communities. Moreover, inclusive social protection systems are necessary to provide support for LGBTI people who are disproportionately affected by economic crises.
Lastly, achieving SDG 10’s targets require governments to take active steps to combat discrimination, including repealing laws that target LGBTI individuals.
